The Department of Qur’an and Sunnah Studies in the Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, IIUM made it compulsory for the PhD students to study the course on “DIRAYAT AL-MATN” [Understanding the Texts of Hadith]. This course deals with a methodological and analytical study of the different kinds of Sciences of Hadith issues related to the texts of Ahadith. It also deals with the methods of Muhaddithin [Hadith experts] in their studies and presenting samples from their books. The course specifically deals with Gharib al-Hadith [uncommon uses of hadith], Mukhtalaf al-Hadith wa Mushkiluhu [conflicting and difficult hadith], Muhkam and Mutashabih [profound and similar], Nasikh al-Hadith wa Mansukhuhu, [Abrogating and abrogated hadith] and Asbab wurud al-Hadith [circumstances of ahadith of the Prophet] etc. We have collected what we have assigned on our students from the researches that they wrote in the course, so that it may be regarded as a university course benefiting students in any university at the undergraduate or postgraduate levels. Rather, it may even benefit all lovers of knowledge of Sunnah of the Prophet throughout the globe.
